Believe it or not, the holidays are upon us, and you know what that means: Road trips to Grandma’s house. If you and your friends or family are ready to head out of Newark, NJ, this holiday season, consider these travel tips courtesy of our on-the-road experts at Value Van and Car Rental.
1. Make a list—check it twice.
Even if you’re not a “list person,” do it anyway. Make a to-do list of what you need to do to get out the door as well as a packing list for everything you need to take. There’s so much to remember during the holidays that it’s easy to forget something if it’s not on the list.
2. Allow plenty of time.
You won’t be the only person out on the road between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Traffic will certainly pick up, so even if it normally takes you only a couple hours to get to Grandma’s, add in some extra travel time so you don’t worry about showing up late.
3. Simplify your packing.
If you’re staying longer than a day or two, avoid the urge to overpack. You can always do a load of laundry and wear those PJs an extra day. You will enjoy your road trip more when you have plenty of space and don’t have to share it with your oversized suitcase.
4. Pack snacks.
Save time and money (and maybe even stay a bit healthier) by purchasing snacks ahead of time and having them in the car. That way, they’re ready when you need a little bite to eat, and you don’t have to pull over to find the nearest truck stop.
5. Rent a car.
Whether you have a personal vehicle or not, consider renting a car for your trip. You can avoid adding the extra miles on your vehicle, get more space with a minivan or passenger van, and save your car from the wear and tear. And if you don’t have a vehicle, then you have the freedom to come and go as you please without having to rely on public transportation or a ride from Great Aunt Edith.
