Trail Description

The South Mountain Reservation trail in Essex County, NJ is beautiful year-round. When the skies are clear, you can even catch glimpses of the New York City skyline at certain points—even more so when the leaves begin to fall! Other views along the trail include beautiful streams, lush trees, and a picturesque waterfall.

This trail is considered moderately difficult and is about five miles long. The park encourages hikers to allow at least four hours to complete the trail. We recommend that you check trail conditions on the South Mountain Reservation website prior to hopping in your car rental to make sure the trail is both accessible and open.

Getting There

You can easily get to the trailhead from anywhere in Essex County, NJ. It’s just a quick car rental trip away! The South Mountain Reservation trailhead is located just a few minutes off Interstate Route 78 at the Maplewood/Millburn Exit 50B.
