An Architectural Tour of Newark

Architectural enthusiasts and history buffs can find many interesting attractions in Newark, New Jersey. Newark has many buildings and homes from different time periods, offering visitors a glimpse into NJ and American history and culture. So pick up a 15 passenger van rental from Value Van & Car Rental, and check out some of the following architectural gems in Newark.

Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart

A National Historic Landmark, this majestic church sits in the heart of Newark. The cathedral began construction in 1899, but its doors were not open to the public for worship until 1928. The Cathedral Basilica was not announced as complete until 1976. Visitors can come for mass or tour the church, taking in the marble floors, stained glass, woodcarvings, and much more.

The Ballantine House

Officially part of the Newark Museum, the Ballantine House is a beautiful limestone mansion. You can find a parking spot for your NJ van rental and stay a while, exploring the exhibits set up within the house. These exhibits can give you more insight into the home once owned by the Newark beer-brewing family of Jeannette and John Holme Ballantine, as well as the greater Newark area.

Newark City Hall

The hub of city government, Newark City Hall (pictured above) was built in 1902. Wikipedia notes that the city hall is a five-story building designed in a Beaux Arts style. You cannot miss city hall, due its distinctive golden dome.

Feigenspan Mansion

This mansion was built in the Second Renaissance Revival Style by Warrington Lawrence in the early 20th century. The NJ Historic Trust notes that the Feigenspan Mansion is “one of only a few surviving mansions of this style in Newark.”

These unique buildings and homes of past Newark residents show visitors the rich history and architectural style found throughout historic Newark. You can do a drive-by tour all in one day, perhaps stopping for a short while at each location. Or, you may decide to split up the Newark attractions and see each of them in more depth.
